What We Want

We simply want the taxi industry to be safer for everyone.

Using taxis is a valuable mode of transport for anyone getting home alone, and can be far safer than other options.
However, with more intimidation and attacks by “bogus” taxis and more licensed drivers with aggressive criminal backgrounds, it is becoming more risky and many people admit to feeling unsafe when travelling alone.

The campaign simply wants to make small changes that we believe will imake immediate safety improvments:

  • No Taxi licences to be issued to applicants with a background of sexual or aggressive behaviour to people.
  • One National Taxi License plate, displayed on the back, front and inside of the cab
  • A picture of the cab driver displayed on the inside the cab.

If all three points were put into place then the safety of women travelling alone by taxi would be improved dramatically.

Remember:

  • Many cases of attacks from licensed drivers have come from drivers that already had criminal backgrounds of assault and aggression.
  • Most cases of taxi crimes go unreported because women are either unaware they are in a “bogus” cab or do not know what or where a taxi licence number was.  Reporting a taxi licence number would enable police to track down the driver quickly and easily and would also act as a deterrent to rogue drivers.
  • If the Taxi Licence itself was reviewed and made into one standard plate displayed on the front, back and inside of each taxi and in every borough then people can be educated on what to look out for.
